Nadelik Lowen ha Bledhen Nowydh Da. A Cornish Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from us C Fylm! As we get ready turn a corner into the New Year, we share a few highlights of 2021 in our traditional round-up of the year. Here’s a snapshot of C Fylm’s 2021.

Mawnan Film Club

Film clubs reopened, and we welcomed audiences back to our screenings

This year we had 115 screenings mostly from May when lockdown was lifted. Film screenings took place in 36 venues including village halls, churches, and community spaces all over Cornwall. We had Cornish language short films, director Q&As, documentaries, live-streamed performances, and online screenings.

You, our lovely audience, have supported us and your communities by buying tickets, smiling over the top of face masks, and making donations to help us through a challenging time.

You stayed at home, then came together safely and smiling to watch films and share special experiences with us – so we’d like to say a huge thank you!

We also have another massive thank you to our film club organisers and volunteers who have worked extra hard to put shows on for their community, and have kept us all safe whilst doing so.

They really are superstars!

In 2021, our most screened films were:

  • Behind the Postcard with a whopping 26 screenings
  • The Good Liar at 7 screenings
  • Nomadland and Summerland both had 5 screenings across the C Fylm network
  • Downton Abbey and 23 Walks both had 4 screenings in our film clubs

Behind the Postcard

As well as our regular film club screenings, this year we also premiered Behind The Postcard, a film commissioned for the G7 Summit in Carbis Bay. A collaboration between Creative Kernow, Screen Cornwall, Hall for Cornwall and Wildworks, Behind the Postcard presents and represents the creative and cultural industries in Cornwall.

The film was simultaneously screened in 23 community venues, covering the length and bredth of Cornwall. For many of our film club volunteers this was their first screening since lockdown in 2020, and they did the most fantastic job at keeping our audiences safe.

Great Big Green Week

The Biggest Little Farm screening at Newquay Orchard

C Fylm joined The Great Big Green Week for 2021, screening films about the environment, sustainability and the natural world across Cornwall.

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest call for action on climate change, and took place from 18 to 26 September. A litter-picking sound walk in Redruth kicked off our week, where we then screened films including 2040, Before the Flood, I Am Greta, More Than Honey, The Biggest Little Farm, and Wild Cornwall – Out on the Edge.

Ian McCarthy, director of Wild Cornwall, joined us for a Q&A after the screening of his film. Following the turning of the year in Cornwall, it showcases the dramatic lives of many species that call this region home.

More Than Honey screening at Krowji

We felt the incredible support of our audiences, volunteers and friends after a devastating fire at Krowji

We were saddened and distressed to report a major fire at Krowji, where C Fylm is based, on 16th May 2021. The fire devastated 17 artist studios, and severely damaged the Creative Kernow offices where we called home. Our offices and most of our screening equipment were lost, but we found so much comfort in the support we found. Our Krowji Emergency Fund JustGiving page received donations from across Cornwall and beyond, enabling Krowji to help the artists that needed it most. We received offers of temporary work spaces from fellow creative organisations, cups of tea, kind messages and lots of love.

Thank you to all our film club members, organisers, volunteers, donors and partners for all your support this year. We couldn’t have done it without you!

C Fylm will continue to support film clubs in communities all over Cornwall next year from January 2022. Watch this space for event details soon, or sign up to our newsletter to find out what’s on.
